Before signing up for satellite internet service, or if you are looking for an alternative to satellite internet, I would like to suggest broadband access through either Verizon or Sprint EVDO service. I have been using Hughes satellite internet service since August 2005. I have had my share of issues with it. For my needs the cons out weigh the pros. I decided late last month to give Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess a try. So far I am extremely happy with the service. It performs to my expectations - speeds are better than satellite, latency is extremely low (VPN works!), and not having a daily bandwidth limit is very nice. Another plus is that I can use my laptop and the datacard (modem) anywhere Verizon has cell phone coverage.
I did quite a bit of research in determining whether wireless broadband (EVDO) would work for me and I would like to share my findings with you to help you decide whether satellite or EVDO may be right for your internet service.
Please remember to thoroughly read each providers TOS and/or customer agreements before signing up for any service. Many of these providers have limits as to what you may use their service for and may shut your service off if you are not complying with their TOS.
First let me show you the Verizon (blue is EVDO) and Sprint (orange is EVDO) EVDO coverage maps.

I've created a document that compares the cost, speeds, etc. of the various satellite and wireless (through cell tower) providers in our area. - Satellite/EVDO Comparison (pdf document)
I've created another document on tips for determining if you can get EVDO coverage at your location. - EVDO Tips (pdf document)
Verizon Wireless has a good chart giving approximate data usage examples for what it would take to reach the 5GB monthly limit that they impose - Data Usage Examples
I hope this helps you in determing whether satellite or EVDO may be right for you. If you have any questions about these services or how to determine if you are in the coverage area for EVDO please contact me (through the contact page) and I will try to help. -- Jen Richardson
